Easter in Tibet 2027
Easter Sunday 2027 falls on 28 March. For Tibet that is close to ideal timing: the end of the dry season, with the clearest views of the year at Yamdrok Lake and Everest, peach blossom in the Nyingchi valleys, and prices still at the low-season level. This page, written from our office in Lhasa, answers what guests ask us most about an Easter trip and lists our two Easter departures.
Is Easter a good time for Tibet?
Yes, one of the better ones. In late March and early April the sky is clear most days, which is why the turquoise of Yamdrok Lake and the north face of Everest look their best now. Nyingchi's wild peach trees are in flower against the snow mountains. And it is still quiet: most sights have few visitors and hotels have not yet moved to summer rates.
People expect it to be cold because winter has only just ended. In practice the days are sunny and you feel warm in the sun — the reason most Lhasa homes have no heating at all. The cold is on the high passes, such as the Gampala above Yamdrok Lake, at Everest Base Camp, and at night everywhere.
Weather at Easter
| Place | Daytime | Night |
|---|---|---|
| Lhasa, 3,650 m | 14 to 16°C | 0 to −3°C |
| Shigatse, 3,840 m | 12 to 15°C | −3 to −6°C |
| Everest Base Camp, 5,200 m | 7 to 10°C | −8 to −12°C, strong wind |
| Nyingchi, 2,950 m | 15 to 17°C | 2 to 4°C · peach blossom |
Day and night are far apart, and wind adds to the cold on open ground. Skies are mostly clear. Month-by-month figures are on our Tibet weather page.
Is Everest Base Camp open at Easter?
Yes. By late March the road to the base camp is normally clear, barring a late heavy snowfall, and the guesthouses and hotels along the way have reopened. In April the climbing expeditions pitch their tents below the north face, so an Easter trip often gets a look at the expedition camp as well as the mountain.

What else is open — Namtso and the high passes
Nearly everything: the Potala Palace and the monasteries, and the roads to Yamdrok Lake, Gyantse, Shigatse and Everest. The one place with a question mark is Namtso Lake in the north, the coldest corner of Tibet. After a snowfall the icy climb to the viewpoint can close for a day. It is not closed all the time, so if Namtso matters to you we build in a spare day. Mount Kailash's season starts in late April — an early Easter is too soon for the kora.
What is special about Easter in Tibet
Peach blossom in Nyingchi. From late March through April the wild peach trees along the Yarlung Tsangpo and Niyang valleys flower under the snow peaks, and Nyingchi holds its Peach Blossom Festival. Nyingchi is also 700 m lower than Lhasa, so beginning your trip there — two days among the blossom while your body adjusts — is the gentlest possible start to Tibet.
The first ploughing. In the villages around Lhasa, Shigatse and the Yarlung Valley, farmers open the farming year with a ceremony: everyone in their best clothes, oxen and tractors hung with white khata scarves and bells, incense, barley wine and the chemar grain box offered for a good harvest. If you are driving between Lhasa and Shigatse at Easter, you may well pass one. See our Tibetan festivals page for the year's calendar.
Where to go at Easter
- Lhasa — Potala, Jokhang, Barkhor, Sera and the Tibet Museum, before the summer crowds.
- Nyingchi — peach blossom under snow peaks, and an easier start to the altitude.
- Yamdrok Lake, Gyantse and Shigatse — the clearest lake colours of the year, and the spring ploughing in the villages.
- Everest Base Camp — open and clear; expedition tents from April.
- Namtso Lake — possible with a flexible day in case of snow.
- Mount Kailash — not yet; the season opens in late April.
Crowds and prices
Easter is not a busy time in Tibet. Hotels are still on late low-season rates and most sights are quiet. The exception is Nyingchi in blossom season: rooms there are expensive and in short supply, so if Nyingchi is in your plan, book early.

Which trip fits your Easter break?
- About a week: 5 days in Lhasa and Yamdrok Lake, or 7 days to Everest Base Camp and back.
- About two weeks: 8 or 9 days with Everest, or start in Nyingchi for the blossom and go on to Lhasa and Everest — 9 to 12 days.
What to pack
- Sunglasses and sun cream — the spring sun at altitude is very strong.
- A warm jacket for evenings and cloudy days; rooms can be cool.
- A down jacket if Everest Base Camp is in your plan: nights there are well below freezing.
- Shirts and trousers for warm, sunny days in Lhasa.
Children and health
We advise against bringing children under three to the plateau — advice that came from a group of high-altitude medical researchers who travelled with us. And for everyone: don't come to Tibet with a cold; at altitude it can turn serious. See our altitude sickness page.
Frequently asked questions
How far ahead should I book an Easter trip?
At least a month before departure, for the Tibet Travel Permit. Earlier makes seats easier. There is no deposit; if the permit is not issued you get a full refund (see our terms).
Is Tibet crowded at Easter?
No. It is still low season everywhere except Nyingchi in blossom time.
Can I see peach blossom at Easter?
Yes, in Nyingchi from late March through April. Our 10 April Peach Blossom departure is timed for it.
Is Namtso Lake open at Easter?
Usually, but snow can close the road for a day, so we plan a flexible day for it.
How many days do I need over Easter?
Five days for Lhasa and Yamdrok Lake, seven for Everest, nine to twelve to add Nyingchi or Namtso.
